Easy, groomed cruisers and friendly instructors await first time mountain visitors, while double blacks, terrain parks and backcountry deep powder is there for seasoned skiers and snowboarders.

Mount Crested Butte has a base elevation of 9,375 feet and peaks at 12,162 feet above sea level. Sixteen lifts serve the area that has a total of 121 trails.

Crested Butte has North America’s steepest trail, comically named Rambo. The longest trail at the resort is Peak to Treasury, at 2.6 miles long.

Beginner terrain takes up 23% of the mountain, 57% is intermediate and the remaining 20% is rated expert. Within the expert terrain, there is a Superpipe and one of the three terrain parks- DC Canaan Terrain Park. Keystone Rail Park has features for both expert and beginners and Kid’s Park is an all beginner park.

The resort receives 300 inches of snow each year, but just in case, Crested Butte has snowmaking on 282 of their overall 1,167 skiable acres.

The mountain has multiple mountain sports teams, if you’re looking to stay for a while and enter a race. They also have an Adaptive Sports Center for skiers with disabilities.

In 2009, the popular Ice Bar restaurant at Crested Butte got a major facelift. The renovation doubled the size and expanded the deck. Stop by to check out the new look while dining on lunches of upscale American cuisine with French influences and sipping exotic drinks at the bar made completely of ice. The Ice Bar is located on the mountain at the base of the Twister Lift.

Also new in 2009 was The Adventure Park, a new base area with year-round ice-skating, bungee trampolines and a climbing wall. The skating rink is made from SuperGlide® artificial ice, the first of its kind in Colorado. Also head to Adventure Park for lift served tubing.

Crested Butte’s Nordic Center is where to go for half-day cross-country skiing and snowshoeing tours in the Gunnison National Forest and Washington Gulch. Trails wind around for 31 miles just outside of town.

The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum is another off-slope recreational activity. The museum will teach you all about the local geology and residents throughout the ages, from the original Ute Indians and miners, to the ranchers, skiers and mountain bikers that now make Crested Butte their home.

The town of Crested Butte has a historic downtown that remains largely unspoiled by too much development. If you’re looking for an authentic Colorado mountain town with great skiing, Crested Butte is what you’re looking for.
