Aspen Ski Resort might as well be spelled l-u-x-u-r-y. This alpine playground 200 miles from Denver has some of the best skiing in the world and the Colorado accommodations to match.

The mountain itself is nicknamed “Ajax” and is deep in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The resort sits almost on top of the town, which gives you a fantastic preview of the slopes even before you’re on the lift!

The location at the foot of the resort also makes it very convenient for guests staying in Aspen. Area hotels are some of the best in the Rockies, so prepare to be pampered. Lodging like the Hotel Jerome have luxurious amenities like twice-daily maid service, bath butlers and turndown service, in addition to the “normal” amenities like Jacuzzis, free airport shuttles and state-of-the-art fitness room.

A vertical drop is 3,267 feet provides the steep runs and bumps that make the resort famous. They also have smooth groomers and glade runs when your knees need a rest. The terrain is rated mostly intermediate to expert, so beginners might have a better time at nearby Buttermilk.

Conveniently, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk are all part of the same company, so when you buy a lift pass, you’ll have access to all four resorts, thus their slogan “The Power of Four.”

The 76 trails at Aspen are spread across 675 acres of skiable terrain. The longest run is three miles long.

Views of White River National Forest and the challenge of the double black diamond runs draw even the most seasoned skiers and snowboarders each year from about mid November to mid April. Olympic athletes and lots of celebrities agree that Aspen has some of the best terrain in the US, if not the world.

Ajax has seven chair lifts and an originally designed gondola, the Silver Queen Gondola, in which skiers and boarders sit back to back and exit on three sides.

Snowboarding has been welcomed to the ski resort since 2001, but there is still some skier-only terrain like the sculpted mogul runs that are coveted at Aspen and a skier only terrain park.

Through the resort you can take a “Powder Tour.” They take guests out by Snowcat to some of Aspen’s hidden, unmarked terrain where huge powder stashes are a dream come true.

When you’re off the slopes, the town of Aspen is also there to entertain, although at a price. The posh shops include Ralph Lauren, Dior, Louis Vitton, Prada, Gucci, Fendi and Bvlgari. Many four star restaurants will serve up anything from spicy Thai to juicy steaks.

Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, sledding, and snowshoeing are other fun winter activities in Aspen.
