I'm told that arriving in Calgary Airport is the best way to access the Rockies but is there any way that Icould fly somewhere relatively close and then make my way to Banff on a mini road trip? Any suggestions?

The sky is the limit as far as options are concerned. You could fly to Vancouver for example and rent a car from them. If you dont mind driving, it is a lovely journey. If you want to start your holiday in Jasper, then maybe Edmonton Airport would be your best option. Check out the following link and it will give youa run down of your choices.
