Best Expert Resort: Silverton
In the heart of the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado sits Silverton Mountain, an advanced Colorado ski resort excelling in challenging, steep, and deep powder terrain. Its location packs a heavy punch of Colorado weather, where snowfall can exceed over 400 inches annually. Although ample lodging can be found south in the town of Silverton, this destination is essential for advanced skiers and snowboarders.
No gondolas allowed
Never judge a ski resort by its number of chairlifts. Though Silverton lacks in luxurious gondolas, the available transportation brings skiers and riders to outstanding terrain. Runs get as vertical as 55 degrees, with the easier options still hitting the 30-degree mark (steeper than the average run).
From snowcats to helicopter services to old-fashioned uphill hiking, the one chairlift slowly creeping up to the 12,300-foot top grants access to terrain known to have some of the steepest and deepest snow terrain in the country.
Forget freestyle terrain parks, Silverton Mountain is a strictly backcountry ski area with almost 2,000 skiable acres and a vertical drop at about 1,900 feet. Bunny slopes, groomed runs and trails are non-existent in this all-natural ski area.
Experts must be equipped
It is not required to have Avalanche course experience to ski or ride Silverton Mountain, however every skier and snowboarder must be equipped with a beacon, shovel and probe. Luckily, rentals are available at the mountain to help refrain visitors from making an unwanted and costly investment.
If avalanche courses spark interest there are a number of planned programs available. Seminars on backcountry performance, avalanche awareness, and even explosive courses for avalanche blasting are organized throughout the year.
Guide or no guide
The most important detail about Silverton Mountain is when to go. Silverton is not open all winter for experts wishing to ski or snowboard without a guide. It is best to check well in advance for dates open for unguided skiing and riding. However, most days will be open for guided tours maxing out to about 80 visitors per day. Reservations and preparation is strongly encouraged to ensure a satisfying ski or snowboard trip.
Silverton Mountain ski resort is for the advanced-level athletes who are up for a check in skill, stamina, and an ultimate adrenaline rush. An unforgettable experience awaits those willing to test their abilities.
