Here are a few ideas of things to do and places to visit while you’re in Dillon:
Lake Dillon
This lake is actually a reservoir created by the Dillon Dam. Its pristine waters are now a playground for boaters and sailors, not to mention fishermen, with all the stocked salmon and trout swimming around.
Skiing Near Dillon
Dillon is in a county known for legendary skiing. This area in the White River National Forest is home to Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin or even Vail. Snow falls in amazing amounts and the altitude keeps it here long into the spring,
Hot Air Ballooning
View Summit County like you have never seen it before! Well, maybe you have seen a similar view, but from the confines of an airplane. Champagne toasts and open air make all the difference on these joy rides in the Rocky Mountains. Several companies serve the area, offering a variety of excursions in hot air balloons.
Colorado Microbrews
The state is ripe with delicious microbrews. Dillon’s contribution is the Dillon Dam Brewery. It has a fun atmosphere, with a bar, beer garden and family-friendly restaurant, complete with ten TVs! They brew hand-crafted ales, lagers and root beers for the little ones. If you don’t have time for one of their free tours, at least stop by their store to pick up a six pack or a keg!
Hiking Around Dillon
Old Lake Dillon Trail is a haven for hikers. It is situated between Dillon and Frisco, just off Dillon Dam Road. There is plenty of parking at the easy to find trailhead. The hike only gains 150 feet and is .75 miles around, so it’s a great warm up or a trail for kids.
Another good choice for families would be the Lily Pad Trail. Its longer, at 3.2 miles, but is an easy hike for all ages. From the trail, you and your kids can observe a fantastic mix of wildlife, scenery and beaver ponds. You’ll find the trailhead in Silverthorne, Colorado, just a hop, skip and a jump from Dillon on Highway 9. Bring bug spray in the summer and keep your kids close, elk and moose have been spotted on this trail!
The Ptarmigan Trail is 4.3 miles round-trip and is especially beautiful in the fall, when all the surrounding aspen trees have changing leaves. The trail winds and climbs its way up a well-maintained path of mulch and pine needles. As it gains in elevation, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Lake Dillon, Buffalo Mountain, Red Peak and the Gore Range. Hikers can then go on to Ptarmigan Peak, at 12,500 feet, approximately 2.4 miles beyond the lookout. It is the most difficult portion of the path, with a vertical gain of 2,100 feet.
