Colorado Rafting: The Dolores River

Colorado offers world class white water in the Rockies.

Colorado offers world class white water in the Rockies.

The Dolores remains is one of the last wilderness rivers in the United States that allows multiple day trips and does not require a special-use permit. This is because, despite its great beauty and floating potential, not that many people run this great Rockies river.

Colorado offers world class white water in the Rockies.

For those that do make it here, the lack of crowds makes the Dolores a great place to get away and relax for a bit with some Colorado rafting. The more than 50 miles of floatable terrain ranges from a forested mountain environment with crystal-clear water to a more desert like setting. Along the way you’ll find plenty of Class III and IV whitewater to keep your adrenaline pumping.

Here’s a great guide to get you on the Dolores:

Rocky Mountain Adventures: Fort Collins company that offers beginning to advanced rafting trips on the Dolores, as well as the Cache la Poudre (closest to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park), Clear Creek, Upper Colorado and North Platte rivers. Overnight trips, fly-fishing, and kayaking instruction available.

  1. [...] Dolores River This river offers multi-day river trips in the wilderness of Colorado. Its not overcrowded, so you can really get away from it all on this beautiful river. The river flows crystal clear through a treed alpine area and then to a sandy juniper dessert at the end of its 50 miles. Consistent Cass III and IV rapids keep things interesting for a good three-day trip. No special-use permit required! [...]
