Gunnison, Colorado

Gunnison, Colorado.

Gunnison, Colorado.

Gunnison, Colorado is a great place to base your Rockies vacation, as well as an interesting stop on your way to the many wonders of the Colorado Rockies. It’s an interesting place, on part college town, one part college town. Nearby you’ll find Crested Butte, with its awesome skiing, and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Gunnison, Colorado.

So you’ve got all your Rockies vacation bases covered here: great hiking, and skiing, excellent fishing and rafting on the Gunnison River, great mountain biking at the ski resort (where mountain biking allegedly got its start) and a cool little town full of fun locals, great hotels and lodging and a variety of interesting restaurants.

Just a little to the west, you’ll find the Curecanti National Recreation Area, Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Blue Mesa, Colorado’s largest man-made lake, is full of canoes, sailboats, pontoon and motor boats, water-skiers, fishers, even parasailers all summer long.

Kayakers and rafters will especially love the man-made whitewater park on the Gunnison river. The park runs for several hundred feet, with various rock formations creating an awesome playground for kayakers and rafters. Fishing is also allowed in some areas.

Gunnison is a bit remote, with a least a 6 hour drive to get to Denver, but it does have a local airport that makes flights from Denver regular and fast. Gunnison also has several hotel and lodging options to chose from. Here area few of our choices.

The Quality Inn Gunnison: Four blocks away from Gunnison’s main street, two miles to the Gunnison river, and only one and a half miles from the airport. Complimentary continental breakfast, conference rooms and business center, indoor pool and spa tub and more. Visit The Quality Inn Gunnison for more info or to make reservations.

Holiday Inn Express and Suites Gunnison: This Gunnison hotel offers free WiFi, complimentary buffet breakfast, cable television, indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and much more. To book or get more info, visit Holiday Inn Express and Suites Gunnison.

The Comfort Inn Gunnison: Located just three miles from the Dos Rios Golf Course, includes heated indoor pool and hot tub, fitness center, complimentary transportation to the airport, cable, internet and more. For more info or to book, visit The Comfort Inn Gunnison.
