Containing one of the most impressive ecosystems in the world, Waterton is home to Waterton Lakes National Park. Here you will find a wide diversity of flora and fauna, some of the most majestic peaks and valleys in the Canadian Rockies, lakes and waterfalls that defy the imagination, as well as shopping, dining, and world-class accommodations for every taste.

Hiking

Follow historical routes through the mountains with trails such as the Crypt Lake Trail that is easily accessed by the M.V. International ferry, taking hikers to and from Watertown’s center. The trail climbs to over 2300 feet, covering a distance of 10.7 miles round trip. With its steep cliffs, its natural tunnels, and a 600 foot waterfall, this trail has its challenges. Hikers will need to traverse ledges with cables and scale cliffs with steel ladders. Finish your hike with a picnic at Crypt Lake where you will marvel at the turquoise waters that reflect the surrounding mountains.

The Carthew-Alderson Trail is another hiking trail that is known for its magnificent vistas. Start at Cameron Lake and walk the 11 miles through the Rockies to arrive at Cameron Falls, located in the Waterton townsite. See the valleys below from Carthew Summit, traverse the ancient forests, and enjoy the plethora of waterfalls, lakes, and streams.

Another hiking option is Bear’s Hump Trail, which begins at the Waterton Lakes Visitor Center and ends after 0.6 miles of exquisite mountain terrain. This is perfect for the beginning hiker, or for a pleasant outing with the family.

Wildlife Sightings

The Waterton Lakes Chain consists of clear mountain water easily accessible from the town of Waterton. Rent a canoe and see all that the area has to offer in the way of wildlife and vegetation. Buffalo Paddock is another site where viewing wildlife is easy to do. Bring your camera so the folks at home don’t think the story of the grizzly grazing by the lake wasn’t just one of your tall stories!

Winter Sports

Waterton Lakes National Park is open all year long and is ideal for enjoying some of the best cross-country skiing and ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies.
