CANMORE, Alberta (Rockies.com) – Winter in the Canadian Rockies means snow, and all the activities that snow brings. Skiing. Ice fishing. Ice skating.

And if you’re in the mood for something a bit more uniquely Canadian, dog sledding.

Come to Canmore in the winter, and you could drive a team of dogs on your very own sled … with a trained guide at your elbow, of course. Even if you’re not into driving, you can ride along and see the scenery from a vantage point not often encountered elsewhere.

Dog sledding is a tradition that goes back thousands of years in the Canadian area. Early peoples such as the Inuits have a long history of using huskies. More recently, in 1908, dog sledding became an official Canadian sport.

Part of the charm, naturally, is getting to work very closely with high-spirited Alaskan huskies. These beautiful dogs are friendly and playful. Local dog-sled operators will show you everything you need to know to drive your own team, including how to rig a harness properly and and how to keep the sled under control.

There are many trips available in the Canmore area, and indeed throughout Banff National Park. No matter how many times you’ve been in the area, if you haven’t seen it from the back of a sled, you’ve never see it like this.
