By Michele Kadison

Cranbrook is an excellent base for a vacation in the Canadian Rockies province of British Columbia. It offers all the amenities of larger towns, with quick access to horseback riding, hiking, and many of the area’s attractions.

BC offers some of the most stunning vistas in the Canadian Rockies.

Cranbrook, BC is known as the main commercial center for the region, with its vibrant downtown area and strong sense of community.  A vibrant city, Cranbrook is home to the  Kootenay Ice (the Western Hockey League team), the vibrant Key City Theatre, the Cranbrook & District Arts Council, which sponsors many exciting events throughout the year, and  the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel.

Here you can get a picture of what it was like when the railway began in the Canadian Rockies.  At the museum you will see vintage passenger cars beautifully refurbished to their original glory, including the 1929 Trans-Canada Limited.  Take a tour of the vintage cars and have a late afternoon tea in the elaborately inlaid dining car, the Argyle.  If your vacation travel takes you to Cranbrook in June or August, enjoy Sam Steele Days and the Cranbrook Pro Rodeo, respectively.

Just a short trip east of Cranbrook you will find Fort Steele Heritage Town where you will get a feeling of life back in the 1800s.  Open all year round, there are many attractions here that vary according to the season. Below you’ll find some of our hotel and lodging recommendations for the area.
