It was a hung-over Saturday and a trip to Canmore to visit the musical instrument shop beckoned. Once I realised there was no chance I could afford a new guitar, I figured the money would be as well spent on the best beer deck in all of the Canadian Rockies. The sun was making intermittent appearances dancing around the clothes but all were in a good mood and the heaters were out in force to make up for the unpredictable May weather. The Wood is a big local’s favourite and finally I got a chance to find out why.

Too hung-over for more beer, I had a Caesar which was one of the best I have ever had. The barman personally served us and was extremely helpful and friendly. An assortment of beers and vodkas were ordered around the table and as the mid afternoon sun shone down, a hunger developed which needed craving. Before you knew what was going on, a chicken burger was ordered which was nothing short of sensational. The fries though not enough for my gluttonous liking were crispy and delicious.

Aside from the friendly staff, great food and mouth watering drinks, the views from the deck are stunning. The famous Three Sisters Mountains pop over the top of Canmore and on all sides all you can see are impressive peaks. The Wood is run by the same people as the Drake in Canmore and Wild Bills in Banff and it has an equally good reputation. Three things: If you are taking a trip to Banff, make sure to stop in Canmore. Especially during summer it is stunning and only 20 minutes away. Secondly have a beer in the Wood. Thirdly enjoy your vacation!
