Lake Louise Ski Resort – The Power of Powder
Banff National Park, Alberta
Oh we are spoiled up here in Banff. Sunshine Village, Norquay and Lake Louise are all on our doorstep – and that’s not even mentioning other slopes such as Nakiska. Every night we fall asleep with the thoughts of perfect powder, fast lifts and gravity defying slopes drifting in the semi-conscious mind. Vacation packages are well aware that people want to grab their snowboards and hit as many slopes as possible and Banff and its surrounding area is literally crawling with idyllic resorts – well maybe not crawling! If I ever become a parent, I know I shouldn’t pick a favourite child and the analogy works for ski resorts too in the Rockies but plainly put – sorry kids – Lake Louise is my favourite!
It is one of the biggest resorts in North America with 4200 skiable acres, 139 named runs, a ridiculous amount of off-piste options and some super steep runs that make you cry like a little girl especially when you get knocked down by a little girl. Despite the relative difficulty of some runs, beginners need not fear. There is a green run down from every chair lift. A lot of ski resorts make the claim that you simply couldn’t ski all the runs in one week. Well in Lake Louise they are telling the full truth – trust me I tried.
Aside from the fantastic snowboarding and skiing, the scenery at Lake Louise is unbelievable. Lake Louise itself is something of a magical place. Small as it is, there is something tranquil and peaceful about the little town culminating in the gorgeous Lake itself. Beginners and intermediate skiers have access to an abundance of gentle slopes and long cruisy runs so you can gain confidence and eventually join the suicidal skiers perched at the top of black slopes. The terrain park is the newest attraction and has just added some very cool jump and rail features. If your kid offered you all of these favourites and at a better price, you would have a favourite too!
